Union Chapel Cemetery, located  along the west bank of White River in Washington Township, began in 1822 as the "Whitinger Family Cemetery".  In 1836, Jacob Whitinger (1768-1849) donated the family burial ground to the community, to be used as a community cemetery and for “divine worship without denominational ties”.  The cemetery was then renamed as Union Chapel.
Reportedly, no official burial records were kept until about 1906 and many earlier burials are not documented.  Today, there are over 11,000 burials.
At right are the military burials recorded by the WPA Graves Project of 1939.

Elizabeth Huffman Hague did a reading of the cemetery and the readings have been published by GSMC in a book, “Readings of Union Chapel Cemetery” (1992). The volume is 104 pages, is fully indexed and is available for research in the GSMC library.
The book has been digitized and is available in the Members Section 2, Washington Township list.

NOTE: Our book is not searchable in the GSMC Cemetery Module, but we set up a link to the Union Chapel website that you can search. Please follow their rules:
