Union Cemetery (Center Twp) (Marion Co, Center Twp) 400 S. West Street Indianapolis, IN Based on information in "Indianapolis, a Historical and Statistical Sketch of the Railroad City, a Chronicle of Its Social, Municipal, Commercial and Manufacturing Progress, with Full Statistical Tables" (W. R. Holloway - 1870), the "Union Cemetery" was established in 1834. It was apparently the original public cemetery in Indianapolis and was commonly referred to as the "old graveyard". In 1844, the "new graveyard" was added to it and the combined cemeteries then became known as "The City Cemetery". The Greenlawn Cemetery plot was later added for burial of the Confederate prisoners at Camp Morton. After the opening of Crown Hill Cemetery in 1864, the City/Greenlawn Cemetery was no longer used and, between the 1880s and 1930s, most of the existing graves were moved to Crown Hill and Floral Park.
